SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Matthew H. Bakke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences at Gallaudet University. He was awarded and directs two research programs: the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Hearing Enhancement, a multi-center program of research and development in the area of technology and rehabilitation for people with hearing loss, and a field-initiated research project on the fitting of cochlear implants. Both research grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, NIDRR. Dr. Bakke served as the Director of Research at The Lexington School for the Deaf/Center for the Deaf from 1993 to 2001, and as Executive Director of the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center from 1998 to 2001. He has had experience as a teacher of the Deaf, clinical audiologist and researcher in the speech and hearing sciences. Dr. Bakke received his Ph.D. degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from City University of New York in 1999. Research interests include binaural hearing, hearing enhancement technologies (including cochlear implants) and technologies and materials for improving aural rehabilitation.
