SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Professor Scott J. Bally has been a dynamic force at Gallaudet University since 1988. Dr. Bally brought a diverse background of experience to Gallaudet. He worked for 3 years in the public schools in rural Iowa (1967-9), 3 years at the Army Audiology and Speech Center at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1970-3) and as the Head of Adult Aural rehabilitation Services at the Hearing and Speech Center of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y.(1974-8).

He started as a clinician educator at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in 1978 and then at the Gallaudet College Hearing and Speech Center in 1982. He joined the undergraduate and graduate faculties at Gallaudet in 1991, teaching in both Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology as well as service courses for non-majors (Social Work, Parent-Infant, Education, Counseling, Psychology). He is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department. Dr. Bally is internationally known for his books, book chapters, research and presentations to both professionals and consumers in the areas of speechreading & communication strategies, psychosocial aspects of hearing loss and adult aural rehabilitation practice. He has developed a systems-based aural rehabilitation model which has received national attention. Dr. Bally has authored and co-authored books on speechreading training and clinical therapy approaches for working with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. He is currently working on an RERC grant which focuses on distance aural rehabilitation. Dr. Bally has served on the Steering Committee for the ASHA Special Interest Division on Gerontology, is past President of the District of Columbia Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is the Curriculum Consultant for the Hearing Loss Association of America. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Center for Hearing and Speech Communications in Rochester, New York and the Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People.
